What to ask about a Level 1 chimney inspection

Understand the inspection, its limits and what you should receive before using your fireplace.

Name the inspection you are booking

Inspection levels are defined in the NFPA 211 standard. CSIA suggests asking specifically for the inspection and the sweep you need, rather than assuming one includes the other.

Explain your chimney's history

Tell the contractor about any appliance change, past damage, smoke problem or recent home purchase. If you do not know the service history, say so. Ask whether a Level 1 inspection is enough or a more detailed one is needed.

Understand the limits

Ask which areas will be accessible, whether a camera is used, and how anything that could not be examined will be recorded. A quick visual check does not answer every question about a chimney.

Ask for a useful report

Before booking, agree that you will get the findings in writing. The report should say what was examined, what could not be examined, any recommended work, and whether you should stop using the fireplace until repairs are done.

Keep the report, photos and invoice together. If a recommendation is unclear, ask for an explanation before approving work.

Confirm the next step

Your contractor should explain the right inspection and service for your home. Airway makes the introduction; we do not inspect, certify or guarantee your chimney.
